    I love my Kindle!

    By Big Al on 3/13/2010
    I love my Kindle!
It has turned out to be much better than I imagined it to be! You really do lose yourself in the book. I like that you don't have to fight with the book to keep it open like you often do with paperbacks. Also, the page turns faster than you could turn a page by hand. We went to Barnes and Noble to try the 'Nook' before buying the Kindle and the Nook is slow to turn pages. You have to wait while it thinks about your request.

Before ordering the Kindle I was waiting for the big unveiling of the iPad tablet to see what that would be like. After reading reviews all that day, I was not impressed with it, so I ordered the Kindle that same night. The Kindle has Internet access with no monthly fee! Cool!

I love the dictionary feature. With paper books I have often been too lazy to go get a dictionary to look up an unfamiliar word. Now I don't have to get up!

Also, the changeable type size is a great advantage. With a paper book you are just stuck with whatever type size the book comes with.

I really like how we can highlight important sections and then easily find them in 'My Notes & Marks' and I can even download that to my computer if I want to copy a quote from the book into an email!

All in all, I feel like I got so much more than I expected!

    So far so very good

    By QuantumDream on 3/13/2010
I have been very impressed with the Amazon Kindle so far - battery life is good, the screen is excellent and it is very light and thin. From an ergonomic viewpoint, I wish that the Next and Previous and Next/Home buttons were reversed - so the next was on top as that is where my thumb rests most comfortably whilst reading.

I ordered from the USA site to be delivered to Japan and although it took a number of days for them to dispatch the product, once it left the warehouse it was to my door in 2 days!

As an international user, I have to be pretty disappointed with the $2 dollar markup; especially noticable when the books are discounted to $5 as it makes up a large portion of the cost!

The best thing is that once over the first week of excitement, you can forget you are reading on some fancy new tech, and just enjoy reading!

Could use a built in back light, but other than that no problems so far!

If only the display contrast were more like an actual book

    By Chapps on 3/13/2010
For what it is, I basically like the Kindle. The convenience of having multiple books on the device and instantly being able to purchase and download a book, even while on vacation, is great. Can't beat it.

The basic navigation is OK - although as an iPhone user, I wanted it to have a touchscreen, so that I could flip the pages with my fingers on the screen. With the K2, it's still too easy to accidentally turn a page by pushing a button. And it makes no sense to have this gigantor keyboard taking up space where more screen could go ... when the keyboard is rarely used.

No, you won't use the insanely awful web browser, which will remind you of the first generation mobile phones with data access. Awful.

I could ignore the rest if only the screen better replicated an actual book. But the screen background is gray (don't look at the pretty photos on this site - that's not how the background looks - it's much darker in reality), and the text is a dark gray. Add the wispy font smoothing and you get a screen that's really hard to read unless you have perfect lighting. Yes, you can mitigate this somewhat by knowing how to not only increase the font size by use a special combination of keys to increase the spacing between the lines of text. Amazon doesn't tell you about this - you have to stumble across it on the web (why isn't it in the menu?).

I've enjoyed the convenience of my Kindle, but I can't really recommend it. The e-ink technology is abysmal - it'll remind you of old CRT monochrome computer screens from the 1980s. So I have to confess that today I went ahead and ordered an iPad. I mean, it's the same price as the Kindle DX, same screen size, but a *color* screen, with access to thousands of apps, a full web browser, full video, iPod functions, and *four times* the memory of the DX. For the same price. Oh, and the iPad is a touchscreen (I won't mention the other apps that it comes with, but you get the idea).

C'mon, Amazon, you really have to pull up your game. Competition is very healthy, and the iPad just blew you out of the water. Bring it on and give consumers far more awesome tools. But the Kindle 2 isn't something I'd recommend.
